it should be 5 steps. A step needs to be added between 2 and 3 about the springs/parts exploding everywhere when you barely touch them to remove the pads.

depending on the locale of your local autozone, there might be a few more steps. step 4: find ghetto mechanic hanging around AZ parking lot - step 5: he fixes it in 2 minutes - step 6: go find an ATM and give him $20

It's disgusting that drum brakes are still being put on new cars.

First rule of drum maintenance:

Do not work on the drum #2 until drum #1 is complete. You will need it as a reference.

As someone who has 6 drum brakes vs. 2 disc, this is totally true.

I'm occassionaly that ghetto mechanic... I've done any number of odd things in Autozone parking lots... My favorite parking lot repair though was a Saturday in August when I had parts delivered by BFCP (local foreign car parts warehouse) to the parking lot of a TD Bank out in the 'burbs becuase my brakes had failed on the V70 while going through the ATM. Turned out BOTH front flex lines had ruptured and all the flanges were rusted solid back to the ABS distribution block... lucky I had a pipe bender, cutter and flanging tool in the back... replaced all the hardlines (fuck might as well do the rears too eh?) and flex lines in that parking lot. Volvo factory jack, two cinderblocks, and a walmart special floor jack... took the better end of five hours, and that was after wasteing two hours trying to seperate the flex lines from the hard lines and then waiting another hour for the parts delivery to show up... I drove it home that night though.

ah, good times...

yes, I have totally been there before. Much respect though for doing brake lines. Holy crap! I have done starters, alternators, I put an injection pump in a chevy 6.5 diesel Tahoe once in a parking lot of an advance auto in New Haven (I drank a 40 to blend in). Good times indeed

Agreed. Even living in Vermont, I have to say I don't mind drums all that much. I mean sure, discs are usually easier (don't get me started about replacing rotors on older Toyota trucks... fucking captive rotors. Who does that shit?), but with a torch, a 2lb slege, and one of these

Kinja'd!!!

the things really aren't that bad.

Y'know, I actually did more parking lot repairs on that V70 AWD than anything else... especialy once the PCV system decided to clog up and it began spewing oil out of every exposed bearing... drive 20 miles, stop, dissasemble distributor, clean out oil from distributor, top up oil, reassemble distributor, repeat for 200 mile roadtrip... then the fuel pressure regulator crapped out... and the left nivomat collapsed... That thing was a dissaster come to think of it. But god, were the seats ever comfy.

Sucks when you have 4 wheel disc brakes, then realize your parking brake is a drum inside the disc.

OR HOW ABOUT THOSE AUTO-ADJUSTERS THAT FREEZE UP IN THE SALTY COASTAL NEW ENGLAND AIR AND STOP WORKING SO SUDDENLY YOUR CAR IS ROLLING DOWN THE HILL BECAUSE THE PARKING BRAKE ISN'T STRONG ENOUGH?

Kinja'd!!! Party-vi > If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent
03/06/2014 at 10:25

Kinja'd!!!1

FUCK THOSE TOO BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO TURN THEM IN TO GET THE GOD DAMN DRUM OFF ANYWAY AND EVEN THEN YOU NEED A SLEDGE HAMMER.

This is why disc brakes were invented.

Just out of curiosity, where does one pick up a set of those spring tool things? Last time I did the drums on the Civic I really could have used a set.

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh man. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has had issues with drum brakes. It's the second most challenging automotive related fix that I've had to do. I'm sure I spent a good 3+ hours trying to do the civic's shoes for the first time. There was a lot of foul language involved, especially when I accidentally knocked the piston bits apart, requiring me to bleed the brakes after getting everything back together.

And now I need to do the drums on my wife's Cavalier. Dare I?

Just do a search on Amazon for "spring puller tool", they have about 20 models and sizes to chose from. Most auto-parts stores cary them too, they just may not have them out on the shelves.

I think you're better off with a new car instead of doing those drums.

Hmm. I might have to do some digging around and see if any local stores carry them. Amazon.ca only carries one, and it looks pretty skinny - I'd be worried about snapping the end off of it.
